  1. Welcome Cheryll. Thank you for sharing your creative journey with us. We love your latest record U Need. Could you tell us about how it first came about?

CHERYLL : So the record came about when I was working with Jajii (producer) on some new music. I was in the studio with Lu (guitarist) and we just wanted to be creative. Once Lu started playing the guitar and Jajii jumped on the keys, it was just up from there. The vibe felt natural and the song really built itself in that moment.

The vibe felt really natural and the song started building itself in the moment. I’m very inspired by late 90s and early 2000s R&B, so when we started playing around with those melodies and live instruments, it instantly felt like home to me.

  1. We appreciate this deep, sensual and heart felt record. What do you hope listeners learn from this single, are there any life lessons that you want them to learn?

CHERYLL: In a way, this song is me standing on business and taking back my power, but in a more demure way. Part of maturing is learning to view relationships differently, and when I wrote this I was in a time where I felt undervalued by people’s actions.

This song is basically me saying, listen, I might not be able to give you everything you want, but I can give you what you need. Wants and needs are very different, and once you learn to distinguish the two, you find a lot more peace.

  1. You’ve released some incredible singles so far including , How would you describe your growth as an artist over the years ?

CHERYLL: Thank you, thank you! I’ve grown from a girl to a woman . I’ve improved vocally, spiritually, and just as a person. I’ve improved vocally, spiritually, and just as a person. Sometimes I listen back to my older songs and I’m quite harsh on myself, but every single one of them played a part in my growth.

Naturally, as you mature your mindset changes, your interests change, and my music has evolved with that. I still carry that R&B influence that raised me, but now I bring a lot more life experience and confidence into the music.

  1. You’ve had memorable career highlights , which one is your favourite and why ?

CHERYLL: I’ve had so many great experiences, but performing in Gambia to over 30,000 people was something special.

Standing on that stage and seeing that many people connecting with the music was surreal. It was one of those moments where you realise the dream you had as a young girl is actually happening in real time.

  1.  On the rise, you’ve been performing across the country and building your experience in the music business. What advice can you get the younger generation about living their dreams ?

CHERYLL: Following your dreams is never easy, but enjoy the process. Learn from every mistake you make and stay true to yourself. It’s easy to get distracted by the noise around you, but if you stay focused inward, that light will naturally shine outward.

  1.  Lastly, what can we expect from you moving forward, any more singles coming up, maybe an EP or a headline show this year ? CHERYLL: I won’t give too much away, but yes — definitely more music, more shows, and more content. I took a step back from releasing for a couple of years so I could regroup and realign. I needed that time to focus on myself and become the best version of me. So buckle up… Cheryll is back. For more info and updates follow Cheryll on Twitter , Instagram and Tik Tok
